Although piano makers began using plastic keytops as early as the 1930s, it wasn’t until 1989 that the import and sale of elephant ivory became illegal. We are able to perform limited fills and repairs using ivory reclaimed from old pianos. However if you are using your piano regularly we recommend replacement with high-quality Japanese PMMA acrylic. It is available in a new white shade as well as an off-white ivory shade. We can also replace your existing plastic keytops – with new acrylic or synthetic ivory. Ivory replacement pieces: $100 each, limit 10 per piano.
*Add 1 service call ($140) for reinstallation 3-4 weeks later, as needed. For example, if you need a cleaning ($140) or other repair in addition to a tuning, we would postpone it to the 2nd appointment so we would not need to charge for the full service call, just the the labour to reinstall, likely 1/2 hour ($70) for a full keyboard or 1/4 hour ($35) for up to 15 keys.
